Abstract

The Present Body: Regarding Children, Freaks and Fluids in the theatre of Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio

Since the early 80’s, the Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio has been simultaneously shocking and setting trends in contemporary performing arts. That which triggers the most intense debates is one of their language’s features: the use of children and animals on stage, as well as freaks, “deformed” bodies by extreme obesity or thinness, disabilities or simple aging. This focus on the physicality of the body —which expresses also in the intense handling of its fluids— is a resource that enhances the quality of presence over representation. Therefore, besides the ethical dilemma, it is needed to investigate the tension between mere morbid and aesthetical interest.
